#DYK Canada’s forest sector can pull the equivalent of 30 megatonnes of CO2 out of the atmosphere every year. That’s the equivalent of taking 9,000,000 cars off the road. #ForestryForTheFuture

Our forests and how we manage them have a critical role to play in providing nature-based solutions to climate change. Less than 25% of Canada’s forest area is available for harvest and we actually harvest less than 1% of those lands per year. When these designated forests reach maturity, they are harvested, and the wood is used to make a variety of environmentally-friendly products such as lumber for construction. These wood products store carbon for many years, extending their role as climate change assets by moving the carbon capture potential of our forests into our cities. After a managed forest is harvested, it is regenerated to grow more trees so the forest returns. Because younger forests absorb carbon faster than mature forests, we ensure our forests continue to serve as a critical carbon sink in our fight against climate change.
