It comes as the Swedish Forest Agency described Johannes as “probably the most extensive storm to hit the country in the past ten years” — and the fourth most destructive since the 1930s — after hurricane winds ripped across Sweden, Norway and Finland, flattening vast tracts of commercial forest.

WoodScanner understands the heaviest damage stretched from Dalarna and Gävleborgs län, 300 kilometres north of Stockholm, through Uppland and deep into Norrbotten County on the Finnish border. According to Fredrik Munter, CEO of Mellanskog – one of Sweden’s largest forest cooperatives – billions of kronor worth of timber have been brought down, with crews racing the clock to salvage wood before rising temperatures trigger rapid deterioration.

It comes as three people in Sweden were killed by falling trees, while tens of thousands of households lost power as the storm carved its way across the region. Finland and Norway escaped fatalities but still faced widespread outages, blocked roads and heavy snow damage.
